Yes, it's happened many times, even in modern times. My grandfather and grandmother died in the same week last year. My grandmother called my mother and actually told her she was going to follow her husband after she said goodbyes. So the old definitely have the power to leave this life in certain circumstances. But also the young. Iseult finding Tristan dead and holding his head in her lap, knelt facing the East (as we Catholics have always done) and after praying she gave up her soul.
Also, Walt Whitman told a story of when he met a marine who told him about an Indian warrior who was forced to leave Florida and his way of life. The Indian learning this, grabbed his axe with both hands and pacing up and down the room with a strained face, he sat or laid down still clutching the axe and literally died that instant of a broken heart. There are many more stories I heard of this too.
