How can I avoid washing my hair as often, but not let it get super greasy?

My hair gets greasy pretty easily, I normally wash it every other day. However, I recently dyed my hair purple and until my mom buys shampoo again (she says she will then purchase color-safe shampoo), I'm cutting back on washing my hair. It helps to not put products in my hair too often and brush my hair after getting it wet but not washing it (to distribute the oils), but is there anything else?

There's evidence that human hair doesn't need to be washed at all and keeps its condition. I saw an experiment where someone stopped washing it and she said it did smell a bit sheepy after three weeks, but after six weeks it was in the best condition it had ever been in.
@GlassDog: I've known people who have done that and it just looks greasy.

@WickedGreat: I think most people give up before it gets to the point where it's in good condition again.
They did it long term.

@WickedGreat: Hmm, I guess it mustn't work for everybody. Do you know if they ate a lot of meat or fat in their diets?
No idea
