Is the Pasteur treatment still the treatment of choice for rabid dog bite?

Someone here posted a story of being forced to undergo the excruciating pain of the Pasteur treatment which he described as 14 shots in the navel, one a day for 14 days. I once knew a woman who said that she and her entire family had to undergo this treatment back in the 1950s. She said it was horribly painful and made her whole family sick with nausea and fevers.

I understand this treatment has saved many lives and it would certainly be better than dying a horrible death from rabies...but it seems so barbaric. Is this treatment still currently used? Or are there any newer improved treatments available?

I don't believe that treatment is still standard.

Thanks! I hope not.
