I can't speak for what is happening there but vaccines work on getting the body to build up a response. In the UK I know a number who have been ill for a couple of days after having the Oxford vaccine. In terms of Covid none are 100% effective (ie you may still get Covid) but most stop you getting the more severe effects of having the virus. They are only effective after a few weeks as the body needs time to build up a response so it's important to still shield after having the vaccine for a few weeks whilst that takes place.
