What does it mean when your tongue feels like sandpaper and it burns?

I have seen 3 doctors and 2 dentists and they shrug. None of them has a clue. They tell me not to worry. I've had it for about 5 months. I got it at the same time I got an ear infection and had a tooth extraction. The ear infection got cleared up with an antibiotic and the extraction has healed OK.

It means you're a cat

My tongue feels exactly like a cat's. You could be right.

In all seriousness look at your tongue. Is it white, are there patches, is it dry? What you're describing sounds like thrush and if you had antibiotics for that infection that's likely what it is.

@Flenflyys: I also have swollen glands in my throat. What is thrush? How is it treated?

Thrush is a candidiasis infection that is most effectively treated by an anti fungal like nystatin but you can also use milk of magnesia. But you should first determine whether or not you have oral candidiasis. So are there white patches on your tongue, cheeks or throat and can they be wiped away? If so it's almost certainly thrush but it doesn't always manifest this way either. The best thing to do is see a dr of course but you could google types of oral thrush and compare with the photos.

Another note though, it's a little concerning that doctors didn't identify it as thrush in the first place. There are a handful of things it could be, though thrush isn't ALWAYS obvious. If it is the cause, you should determine what caused it. If it's a result of the broad spectrum antibiotics then it's an easier fix, just rule out any immunodeficiencies to be safe though.

Hope this helps.

Hey Chris

@Flenflyys: I also have swollen glands in my throat. It feels like some kind of infection. I got it with the ear infection, not during or after the antibiotic treatment.

My problem is the doctors seem to interpret everything I have as chronic inevitable incurable problems of aging, rather than testing it to see what it is. It's like they've given up on me.

Sounds like you have a terrible physician. And sore throats often go hand in hand with ear infections or pain because they are connected via the Eustachian tube. So you still have your tonsils, are they touching each other, or at least visible and how visible? Is the back of the throat red, sre there streaks and still the same question about the white patches.

White patches on tongue, no streaks, had tonsils removed in early childhood. Actually, my current doctor is better than the many doctors I saw before her because she actually examined my ear and then gave me an antibiotic. I may try seeing her again about the tongue and throat thing. Right now I am trying a LOT of vitamin C powder (about 8-9 thousand mg.every day buffered with calcium/ magnesium powder in carrot and best juice).

Idk what best juice is but I'd avoid juice until it's been cleared up. It does sound like thrush. If you can wipe the patches away, it's definitely thrush. I've heard before that vitamin c can help reduce issues with thrush if applied directly but I work in medicine so my exposure to alternative health practices is limited.

@Flenflyys: my autocorrect defeats me every time...I meant BEET juice mixed with carrot juice. The swollen glands, headache and fatigue make me think it's a bacterial infection. I may try a course of amoxicillin.

Which glands are swollen? Have you ever heard of Epstein Barr?
