Just out of curiosity

Is anybody here worried about the coronavirus at all I'm not but my coworkers are and my boss is a little bit
BlueVeins · 22-25
I'm worried about it. The virus is spreading quickly, especially in Iran and Italy, and has the potential to kill millions of elderly people if we can't contain it.
Carissimi · 70-79, F
Projections are for it to double every six days. That’s 4 million by May, in the U.S. alone. More than this, the masks and hospital beds aren’t enough. Masks will run out for health professionals, unless they make more pretty fast, but most come from China. An engineer worked out the math, and it doesn’t look good. @BlueVeins

@Carissimi Where you getting that from? I know the virus spreads very fast, but that sounds excessive.
Carissimi · 70-79, F
An engineer, and I can’t remember her name, did the math based on evidence coming from Italy, and the rate of spread there. She also took the number of hospital beds in the U.S., and masks stockpiled by the government, and did the calculations to see how long they would last, given how many healthcare workers would need to use them. She extrapolated from all the data that we have, and came up with these projections. I’ll see if I can find her name. @BlueVeins

No, but I'm tired of hearing about it
Carissimi · 70-79, F
Right, having 2-6 billion infected by summer is nothing. @Larold99
Larold99 · 41-45, M
@Carissimi exactly lol do you think it will be that high
Carissimi · 70-79, F
It’s a possibility based on extrapolating data based on rate of spread, and other factors. An engineer came up with these projections, and she said she used conservative numbers. Projected 4 million in the U.S. by mid-late May. 2-6 billion worldwide. @Larold99

I live in the US epicenter of the COVID-19 spread. Yes, you should be worried, but you should not panic. Wash your hands, after you come in contact with anything that others interact with. You may not be vulnerable, but you don't wan to spread it to others, who might be.
curiosi · 61-69, F
Nothing I can do to change anything. The flu comes every year and every year sadly people die. No different with this.
Carissimi · 70-79, F
You can take precautions. That may change your outcome. @curiosi

I'm not worried about the virus for myself, the death rate is quite low in my age group, but I'm very wary of how people will react to the virus. The way this thing is getting managed in the US though, we're probably looking at tens of thousands of deaths, people are going to freak, buy up all the essentials, maybe even trigger a run on the banks
Larold99 · 41-45, M
@plungesponge yeah one of my co-workers were talking about this

It's not just the virus either, if the medical system gets overwhelmed with sick, critically sick and deceased patients, that means doctors and nurses get sick and taken out of action, and regular ailments start turning deadly. A person with a burst appendix over the next few months is going to find it difficult to organize a surgery. A person who breaks a limb can't find a hospital bed or has to be in a ward with the infectious. People on regular medications may find stocks running out, not just due to panic buying but because India makes a lot of pharmaceuticals and now they have the virus.

I am more worried about what the supply chain will do. I think that will cause more harm. When people start hoarding, they start a frenzy. People are dangerous when they become more selfish than normal. Governments right and kill their own people, wars start over supplies.
Carissimi · 70-79, F
If course. I can no longer visit Europe this summer, and the CDC says I should stay at home, and avoid crowds, which I was doing anyway. It’s disruptive, but I’m taking no chances.
CrazyMusicLover · 31-35
I am worried for my parents and my grandmother. Especially my father seems to take the whole thing with a heavy heart, since he has a seasonal depression like every year. His "everything goes downhill" feeling only increased.

Now whoever comes from Italy and doesn't worry about coronavirus must be crazy because a great economic loss is inevitable at this point.
Something tells me this whole thing will have ugly consequences for many nations.
SimplyTracie · 26-30, F
I am 🙋
But I’m more worried for my mom and grandmas.
It's going to do some damage, but I just keep the bleach handy and go on about my day. I'm more fascinated and intrigued than I am 'worried'.
@Larold99 a 50-50 bleach water solution in a little squirt bottle is more effective than hand sanitizer and a lot cheaper.
Larold99 · 41-45, M
@puck61 and are people really buying out hand sanitizer
@Larold99 I heard there was some price wars happening! People are going to die and the global economy is going to suffer. This might serve as a lesson to all these people who want to fill their countries with anyone and everyone who wants to come. If this happened under a liberal utopia scenario, it would be the nemesis of mankind.
Larold99 · 41-45, M
My boss tells me not to go to the gym and then my coworkers tell me also I could get it there and bring it to the job people are annoying
Syktur · 26-30, M
I'm interested in learning more about it, but I'm not super concerned about actually getting the illness.
Larold99 · 41-45, M
So far it didn't hit Delaware yet unless it did and no one is saying anything
Larold99 · 41-45, M
And who are more prone to get sick anyways
SW-User
I am for my mom and myself
MrAboo · 36-40, M
I’m really not
