A vaccine? A cure?

I've read that this corona virus is a strain of the same virus as the common cold.馃

Corona is a family of viruses. The common cold belongs to that family. What we're dealing with now, is called COVID-19.

@Northwest right. Do you think that a vaccine be formulated?
NorthwestM
@Carla I believe it can, but I am not sure I trust Pence. As of Friday evening, the authority on the topic, was saying that we don't know yet, if getting it once, means you become immune.

The Chinese transferred to scientists around the world, the genetic model of this virus, so computers are cranking around the clock, trying to figure out how to crack its shell.

@Northwest so, there is no vaccine for a cold, sars or mers, but they can crack this? And if this, why not that?
NorthwestM
@Carla We now have an official name for it: SARS-CoV-2

As to why we don't have a vaccine for the common cold, when we have a vaccine for the flu, it's really simple.

There are 200+ different viruses, that cause the common cold. Vaccines would have to be developed for all of them, and you would have to be inoculated for all of them.

The flu: there are a few dangerous viruses, and the CDC, and other organizations, try to play a guessing game, to predict which one is going to hit in a particular season, and they go to town making enough vaccines for every one. This season, it was a hit, and we have the right vaccine.

So, I believe we will get to a vaccine for SARS-CoV-2, the question is when. In the meanwhile, they're experimenting with anti-viral drugs, that work on the flu (reduces duration and symptoms).

This thing has cost China several $ Trillions, and the US growth is going to be flat, meaning potentially multiple $Ts for us, and more for the rest of the world. So, you can bet that everyone is working on a solution.

@Northwest, thank you for taking the time to explain that to me.

@Northwest Antiviral drugs would be very good.
NorthwestM
@purplepen Don't take anything prescribed by Dr. Trump. Anti-virals have to be applied with care, to minimize the possibility of "friendly-fire".
purplepen51-55, F
@Northwest OK. Health Canada tends to be more vigilant.
NorthwestM
@purplepen FYI: there is anti-viral drug, that was sent from a Seattle company to China, and was used to treat patient 0 in the US, as well as another patient in Seattle, who were both critical, and they turned the corner overnight. That needs to be proven clinically and the FDA allowed its use on a humanitarian basis. It's always possible that the dosage and the recovery are orthogonal, so this is only anecdotal.
