I tried many times and besides the first time when I did cold turkey, the only thing that has worked for me is nicotine replacement via Nicorette mini-lozenges (any generic/store brand will do).
They come in 4mg and 2mg. In the last year we dropped to the 2mg ones and I'm hoping to stop altogether eventually.
They're WAY less expensive than smoking, too, so they're awesome.
