My dog bit me today.

I was just brushing him and suddenly he bit my hand. I've got two puncture wounds and my doctor just gave me Vantin and an antibiotic cream. Is that enough? Shouldn't I get shots too? My doctor said that there's nothing to worry about and shots were unnecessary. Any thoughts? What should I do?

If your dog is vetted and had his shots and you are getting the right medical care you shouldn't need shots.

@Fungirlmmm But my dog hasn't had his shots yet.

@Maiya if he has with in the last year he's fine and you're fine. Just follow the doctor's directions. The more important issue is the dog. Suddenly biting you is never ok. If you don't do something about that behavior then next time might be your face. Never let a dog bite you and get away with it.

@TexChik You're right. I'll have to do something about it.

@Maiya When I married my husband had an 18 month old Aussie (female) . By breed they are Leary of strangers and so I left her alone while we were dating. Once we married , and I lived there too. The dog and I interacted much more often. One morning I reached down to pet her and she bit me. Enraged I grabbed her by the neck and tossed her out in the back yard. I went into the garage and recovered my short wooden dowel rod that used to be in a closet and some heavy work gloves. I went back out side and the dog was ready to fight. I swung for the cheap seats and after 3 or 4 landed she started to understand but was still snappy so she got one more. I went in and got cleaned up and came back (wearing gloves ) with a leash and told her to come. she did to a point and then snarled so I grabbed her and pinned her face on the ground while sitting on her. she couldn't move and when she tried to bite , I twisted her ear until she yelped. I kept saying her name and telling her no. My husband was beside himself and was going to have her put down. I made him hush and then I let her up and asked her to come and she did, very sheepishly. I gave her a treat, said good girl and petted her. Then I put her leash on and took her to the vet. I had him keep her and give her a full work up and make sure she wasn't sick and certainly not seriously injured. She had an abscessed molar that never erupted. They treated that, gave her antibiotics and said she was bruised up but nothing serious. After a couple of days I tried with her again. I made her chicken and rice with broth...and she lapped it up. When she finished she was wagging her tail and came over to where I was sitting and sat next to me . I gave her a pat and we were best buddies from then on. Might seem cruel, but I was raised on a farm. Animals know better than to hurt you, and if they do they need to understand how big a mistake it is.

@TexChik I'm glad you were able to get her trained, and she's very fortunate that you took her to the vet and got her tooth taken care of.

@TeresaRudolph71 she just didn’t seem right ... but I made sure she understood who the alpha was . She turned out to be the sweetest dog

@TexChik That's great. I've heard that dogs need to know who is in charge, and some will challenge you more than others.
