What's the best sleeping pill?

I have had trouble sleeping all my life. Now, in my older years, it's much worse. I do everything I have ever heard of to promote a good night's sleep: Exercise (I swim steadily for an hour a day most days), going to bed at the same time, don't watch TV, dark room without flowing night lights or lit up clocks, deep breathing, mind on positive relaxing ideas etc.
I have spent my life trying to avoid sleeping pills except for very occasional over the counter medications like Ylenol PM when I've been in pain. I fear addiction. But I've come to the point where I can't function anymore without more sleep.

I read a few years ago that sleeping pills contribute to Alzheimer's. I quit taking them. If I can't sleep, I read.

I believe it. But at this time in my life, I am trying to heal an injured knee and I need to sleep. Have used the reading method of coping for many years myself.

I am taking brewer's yeast pills. Would that be enough to take with GABA?

In my experience, benzos work best but they do have dependency issues if you're prone to that. I manage this by taking regular breaks to keep my tolerance from going up and by only keeping a small number on hand at a time.
