@bijouxbroussard No. Doug Ford is the brother of notorious (and now deceased) mayor of Toronto Rob Ford who made international headlines for being a crackhead.

Doug Ford is now premier of Ontario and he's uh... very Trump-ish in a lot of ways. Very much his own creature but he's already doing some awful stuff.

@bijouxbroussard Yeah. Trudeau is reasonably popular but right-wing populism is absolutely catching on. I think the federal Conservatives just need a charismatic leader (which they do not have) and we could be joining you.

The scariest thing is when we wrote our constitution (in 1982) the provinces only agreed if we gave them a 'get out of human rights free' card called the notwithstanding clause.

The notwithstanding clause was intended as an emergencies only way for a government to pass laws which violate the constitution. It has rarely, rarely been used.

Doug Ford came in and tried to invoke it almost immediately because he wanted to shrink the size of Toronto's city council. Like... the most extreme power possible over something super minor. This kind of opens pandora's box for that kind of abuse of power.
