autoimmune disease... where the body starts attacking its own cells. its believed to be caused by long term bad diet (especially grains, sugars, alcohol and transfats) that causes bad gut permeability allowing small proteins into the blood stream.. and when the body attacks those proteins it also attacks our cells that look almost the same as those proteins. for some reason its exacerbated by estrogen so it effects women more than men. the inflammation and rashes are symptoms.. and can be lessened with eliminating grain oils and sugars.
