i want to spend an hour at the gym

is it better to lift weights for 30 mins with cardio for 30? or should i do one hour of just cardio? im trying to shed some pounds.

You definitely need some weight training in the program, for reasons already suggested (muscle burns more calories, metabolism increases, etc.); also for bone strength, balance, etc. especially in middle age.
But exercise alone will not lead to weight loss. A healthier and more calorie-conscious diet is also required.
