Why do I get so sick on my period?

On the first day of my period I get so sick. I throw up, can't hold any food down. I get cramps in my stomach that go all the way down to my legs and I overall just feel so tired. After a day I'm fine but I hate feeling like that. Is this normal? Will going on the pill help reduce these symptoms?
