What is "Public Health"?

Without googling, what do you think it is?

I want to know what others think it is. I know what it is, that's why I'm majoring in it.

People always ask me (irl) what I'm going to school for and I tell them public health. Their response is usually " oh, so you want to inspect restaurants"? That is a part of public health (health inspector), but that is not all public health is.

It's the overarching idea of ensuring that disease doesn't spread throughout a community, isn't it?

Oh Geeez!
At first glace I thought you asked "What is Pubic Hair?"
Ok, any of the "public works" occupations are a great goal in my opinion! I'm in the north east and have friends that worked 20 years as cops, have a great retirement and went back in for another six figure salary. Combined current take home is 75K/Yr retirement, 120K/Yr salary with the best benefits package possible. Yes, do not overlook Public Works, Public Safety, Anything to do with the Environment, especially in the North East!

@Engineer lol. I can see that. Yes, safety, environment is it. I hope it is a good fit for me.
Public Health can be lobbying on issues such as drinking, smoking and obesity. Educating people on making better informed life choices and even mounting political pressure to get governments to enforce policies that is to the betterment of it's citizens.

Health issues that affect the entire public and are best addressed by management at the community or population level. Control of infectious diseases would be the most obvious example. Disaster preparation (with respect to health care) another.
