Our new Grandson was circumcised yesterday morning.
Mohel came over, gave him long lasting pain block injections... very experienced doctor (an anesthesiologist) who does a thousand circumcisions each year - mostly in the hospital.. He did a perfect job and our Grandson did not feel a thing.. the pain block was totally effective.. Unlike most of the others in attendance who were not up close I was feeding him a dribble of wine though the procedure... and he did not budge or react in the slightest...
The really good part is that no one gets a vote in him being circumcised... it's one of the commandments in the bible that we as Jews follow. Others opinions to the contrary simply don't matter, this is how a Jewish baby boy is welcomed by his family and community into the covenant by Parents, grandparents, and great grandparents... His severed foreskin? What happens to it? I was given the task of burying it... It will go into the same cemetery that I will eventually be buried in.. which is guaranteed to always be ours.. When my time comes and I am lowered into the ground there and he stands up top and fills that grave a part of him will be in that cemetery with me..
There is a joke about that part.. a tax inspector is auditing the Rabbi and he has questions.. I see that you use a lot of flour - what is that for... Ah we make Challah before each sabbath... what do you do with the left over challah? A we grind it up and we use it to bread chicken strips. I see... I also see that you use a lot of candles what for? Yes we use them for the Sabbath, for Chanukah, memorial candles, havdalah candles ... I see what do you do with the left over wax? Ah we collect it and send it back to the candle company and every so often they give us a free box of candles.. I see.. I understand you do circumcisions.. what do you do with the foreskins? Ah there too we do not waste... we save them up and send them to the tax department and once a year they see fit to send us back a complete shmuck...
