I read many of the responses, and was horrified by how casually cruel and callous some of them are. These propose that however painful, however long it takes to heal, however non-consensual, it is "necessary". Why is it? Mere fashion.
Yes, some adult men want to be circumcised, though I do not know why. I stress it must be by genuine, own consent, not under pressure from cruel parents or peers, money-hungry commercial clinics, or anyone else not personally affected!
One answer shows some regard it as a coming-of-age "ritual" or "initiation" (18 "ideal"). How can mutilating physical manhood possibly create or indicate emotional manhood? It is genital mutilation, even if carried properly as a surgical operation with proper after-care. (If not then it is not only selfish, needless and foolish. It is barbaric).
Genital mutilation of either sex for no real medical reason is pointless, wrong and antiquated. Whilst accepting men having themselves circumcised out of their genuinely free will, it's time enforced or coerced mutilation of males or females to suit others, not the victim is seen for what it is, and outlawed.
Why would they want it though? Why are they frightened to leave themselves intact?
Female genital mutilation has been illegal in the UK for some years now, but although there have been a few successful prosecutions, it is extremely hard to bring cases against any sort of domestic cruelty. Nevertheless, this barbarity, which can easily lead to all sorts of horrible complications and even render the victim infertile, needs stamping out for good.
Circumcising boys for imaginary social reasons has never been a British fashion, and FGM affects certain minority communities, I think mainly from parts of Africa. Yet I still believe it needs the sex adjective deleting, making just "Genital Mutilation" of both sexes, the crime.
.
I was circumcised when very young but it was to cure some genuine medical problem not for some pseudo-ritual excuse.
My brother was not circumcised. Why not? No need! Oh, and he is now a grandfather.
