Old, Polluting Jet Engines Are Being Scavenged to Power Data Centers

They’re rapidly being converted into generators to meet A.I.’s insatiable demand for electricity.

They are also targeting poorer neighborhoods, for instance, Musk cut a deal with politicians in St Louis, to place these things in poorer parts of the city.

Apologies. The NYT header reminded. me of another NYT article: https://www.nytimes.com/2026/03/12/us/elon-musk-xai-mississippi.html, but I misidentified the city as St. Louis, it should be Memphis. I read that article nearly 8 months ago.

This post's header, came from this morning's NYT: https://www.nytimes.com/2026/11/03/climate/jet-engines-ai-data-center-generators-boneyard.html

First, they are recycling, that's awesome. Using natural gas in an old jet engine instead of drawing in the existing grid.

Then you totally go off the rails. Elon is not building a data center in St Louis, it was a SF company and its in the permit phase and the county approved it. It took me 10 seconds to Google the relavent research. Might need to go back to Reddit or X and ask for more proof before you make baseless claims.

instead of doing your research after being called out on it

That would be a bold faced lie.

My post's topic: Old, Polluting Jet Engines Are Being Scavenged to Power Data Centers came from an NYT article this morning:

https://www.nytimes.com/2026/11/03/climate/jet-engines-ai-data-center-generators-boneyard.html

Notice the header? It's the same.

What Musk did, and you're attempting to whitewash, is this:

https://www.nytimes.com/2026/03/12/us/elon-musk-xai-mississippi.html

Which is an article I read nearly 8 months ago, in March of 2026. I forgot the city, but that does not go to the post's topic: Old, Polluting Jet Engines Are Being Scavenged to Power Data Centers. Which you continue to ignore.

Your caim [b][First, they are recycling, that's awesome. Using natural gas in an old jet engine instead of drawing in the existing grid./b]

Another bold faced lie, but you need to learn how to do your rersearch. That Musk is doing it for the sake of recycling and avoiding drawing in the existing grid, is the very definition of intellectual dishonsety. Don't even need the city, or to ask Google to know that.

Musk is not doing it because he wants to avoid drawing in local power supplies, be's doing it because there are no available local grid power sources. So, he bribes and pollutes. He's also not doing it for the sake of recycling.

And the reason, I call it whitewashing:

You read it 8 months ago, forgot the city and then looked it back up again. Maybe you should have refreshed your memory before posting it was St. Louis.

Did I say anything about the engines that was wrong? Do you not get sarcasm? I didn't say Elon was doing it because he was recycling, that was my own opinion, a tongue and cheek comment about lessons we all learned in Kindergarten about that green triangle. If I claimed that Elon was doing it because he was an environmental hero - sure, that would be lying. But I wasn't. Which should be pretty easy to spot if you actually comprehended what I was saying.

So your points basically are;

Jet engines use for data centers = bad
Elon uses generators in Memphis = bad

Two separate points, combined in one post, with mistaken city.

And maybe you should learn how to read. Here's a hint:

https://similarworlds.com/health-well-being/5692407-Old-Polluting-Jet-Engines-Are-Being-Scavenged-to-Power-Data

re-fucking read it.

Do you not get sarcasm?

No. Does that some "discipline?" See, this is sarcasm. Learn how to dole it out.

First, they are recycling, that's awesome. Using natural gas in an old jet engine instead of drawing in the existing grid.

You claimed they're recycling. They're not. In fact it was all in the NYT article header, you know, the one you claimed I sent back in time, to look up "Old, Polluting Jet Engines Are Being Scavenged to Power Data Centers"

I read pollute, scavenge, not recycle. You need to check your facts, before making big claims, especially when someone points them out to you. That's sarcasm as well.

Jet engines use for data centers = bad
Elon uses generators in Memphis = bad

Two separate points, combined in one post,

You seem on first name basis with Elon, Good to know.

with mistaken city.

You continue using the incorrect information, when I've already pointed out this is not the case, at least 3 times in the same thread. What does that make you? That's sarcasm as well.
