Cataract Surgery

My grandpa (86) had it done a few years ago and to this day sees better than myself

oh my husband had that done but it was mostly paid for by medicare.. that shit is expensive

So far my eyes don't have cataracts.

Usually they do one eye at a time with a 1-2 weeks in between. Usually a quick recovery and all my patients did well and only need reading glasses sometimes

I got both my eyes done.. They did not do them at the same time because in some cases the operation fails.. So they did one and 6 months later they did the second..

There will always be potential dangers with any operation.. Infections can cause great damage.. But the dangers are low if your medical system is proffesional and clean..

I've possibly having it done next year. Currently the VA is squabbling with the insurance company over payment.

I'm facing that in the future but people who've had it tell me it's not as bad as you think it would be

Piece of cake. I had it done in both eyes about 10 years ago. I was very nearsighted and can now watch tv and drive without glasses. My close up vision is still a little lacking but no worse than most old codgers.

You do know they replace your natural lenses with artificial ones? Right?

Yes if you want lenses of varying strength you will pay out of pocket. But the regular lenses they put in will give you 20/20. You will need reader's glasses though

I would never get the varying lenses as I still play sports and can't have different fields of vision with fast objects, etc

I had one of my eyes (yep-can't remember which one) done a couple of years ago. The hardest part was numbing the eye with whatever solution they were using .....

I had insurance that paid for it all, including the follow-up visits to the eye doctor.

It is unlikely that they would give you the choice of doing both eyes at once. You may have insurance that covers the entire cost. Mine would have, but I opted for something fancier so I had some out-of-pocket costs.

And I don't think you need to be worried.

I had it done; right eye in 2017, left in 2024. I’d worn glasses since I was about eight. I had to wait to have the second removed because it developed more slowly (insurance wouldn’t have covered it at that point).

While I occasionally use them to read, I’m pretty much glasses-free now. It’s the same basic procedure as lasik surgery. Outpatient and easy.
