Pay attention to yourself in this heat!

Dehydration occurs when your body loses more fluids than it takes in, disrupting the balance of salts and sugars needed for normal function. Common signs include excessive thirst, dark yellow urine, fatigue, dizziness, and a dry mouth.

It is primarily caused by illness, excessive sweating, or not drinking enough water.
Key Symptoms
Recording the early signs of dehydration can prevent the condition from becoming severe.
Mild to moderate:
Thirst, dry mouth, lips and tongue, dark yellow or strong-smelling urine, and peeing less often.
Severe:
Dizziness, confusion, rapid heartbeat, sunken eyes, and an inability to sweat or urinate.

Causes
Dehydration is typically the result of not replacing lost fluids.
Common triggers include:
Illnesses:
Severe diarrhea and vomiting are the most frequent causes.
Sweating:
Strenuous exercise or being in hot, humid weather can lead to significant fluid loss.
Increased urination:
High fevers or underlying conditions like undiagnosed diabetes can cause fluid loss.
Alcohol:
Alcohol acts as a diuretic, causing the body to lose more water.
Prevention and Treatment
For most mild cases, sipping water, diluted squash, or fruit juice is enough to rehydrate. For moderate dehydration or fluid loss caused by diarrhea, using an over-the-counter oral rehydration solution helps restore the balance of salts and sugars.

When to Seek Medical Attention
Babies, young children, and older adults are at a much higher risk for complications.
You should seek immediate medical help if someone experiences severe symptoms such as unresponsiveness, extreme confusion, or the inability to keep fluids down.
