Because no natural hair is *really & truly* black. It is a very dark shade of brown so brunette works. Unless you dye it black but that would also mean we need new terms for pink, green, blue etc hair. Lol
@SW-User true, I'd just say brunette, for me that word is mostly for dark brown hair and sometimes the features that go with it like brown eyes and darker complexion.
