Has anyone here dreadlocked or maintened their hair on their own?

Someone did mine but they got so loose in just 2 weeks, i fixed them from the back at a salon but it's really expensive to continue 💔

I tried doing maintenance with a 0.85 hook but it's not working, do u think the 0.75mm hook will do the job?
Also can you explain why the crochet hook is getting stuck in my hair? Is it because of the size or smth else
