Why do Americans pronounce the word 'pasta' in such a strange way?

Given the apparent influence of Italian-Americans on American culture it really seems to be a linguistic oddity.

@ChipmunkErnie vaguely remember that episode. Wasn't able to watch most of those as a small kid. Was at a babysitter who watched her shows. Wasn't until the reruns that I watched more of them. Different babysitter, in the mid 60s.
ChipmunkErnie · 70-79, M
@DeWayfarer Yeah, as a kid my parents were afraid to let me watch TWILIGHT ZONE. :( But I could read all the horror books I liked. LOL
DeWayfarer · 61-69, M
@ChipmunkErnie dad expected me to be the genius that I never turned out to be.

Bought a complete, 30 volume, encyclopedia americana set. With a full range of extra books like the complete works of Shakespeare, completely, works of Edgar Allan Poe, toastmasters hand book to humor and so forth.

He bought it in 1962, I was only three years old! 🤣
ChipmunkErnie · 70-79, M
@DeWayfarer Didn't get our World Book until I was 8, but we had the 24-volume encyclopedia my grandfather wrote an article for before that.
DeWayfarer · 61-69, M
