Habit Stacking
I’ve mentioned it here a few times without ever really explaining it.
I mentioned it today at work for the first time.
I work construction and we’re all pretty much bashing each other all day. But when I mentioned this nobody knew what I was talking about.
I got half a sentence into an explanation before the jokes started. I didn’t shy away from it though and tried to press on with an explanation. It took awhile but I finally got it all out there and a few of them even grew interested in the concept.
It didn’t stop them from throwing out the zingers but they asked real questions too.
Anywho, from that space of time and conversation, it made me wonder how many people here assume the same things they seemed to think?
You see, most of them seemed to think I was attempting these grand things and trying to make them habits. While that is something you could do, it’s not really what I do.
I habit stack the small things that I think might help me become a better individual. Tiny little things that mostly go unnoticed until it hits as a natural habit.
Things like waving or saying “Hi” when someone makes eye contact. Smiling for no real reason as I’m sitting around or walking. Even if no one’s around. Reading something offline for a minimum of 15 minutes each day. Taking at least 10 minutes a day to be still, quiet, and just listen to myself breathe. Say at least one nice thing to myself each day inside my head and another nice thing out loud.
They’re all very tiny things, and I certainly have more re habits that I’m trying to stack. Many of them much bigger and some of them even smaller.
The point of habit stacking is to find positive things that aren’t overly stressful and attempt to make them a habit of your’s over time.
Usually the initial goal is 30 days in a row. If you make it 30 days you’ll probably continue the practice. If you don’t, you can always begin anew.
But it’s about taking micro- type things…, healthy habits and positive habits, and then stacking them on top of each other to enrich and better your life, state of mind, and your well being.
Hopefully resulting in a new fulfilling, happy, healthier life.
Anyways, habit stacking isn’t some hard road to travel and anyone looking for betterment can find and do things that make every day a little bit, or even a lot more, BETTER !
Be well
Live happy
Keep trying,
Rob
