When I comment on stuff here why are there brackets around the persons screen name?

@Peaches this is an example of how it looks.👀 I don't remember it like this before?
Okay, the brackets don't show up when I post the question, it's around my name and I can only see it BEFORE I post the question....?!

It's a new feature it links directly to the persons profile you tag. Andrew said people who are on your friends list will be the only people notified when you tag them but if they're not on your friend list they won't be notified. I've been tagged a couple times by friends just to test it out and haven't been notified of being tagged at all ? So I think it just links directly to the persons profile which I think is a bit pointless. I just don't understand it fully.

The brackets set off the link method I suppose because if you were to just do @stark there is no link without the brackets
