It rose and fell, like every other empire. No emperor seems to remember this.

@FreddieUK very general outline. The Rise and Fall.

I'm glad that so many of their artifacts and so much of their history has survived. I'm astonished that while they did have elites and a ruling class they also had a large population of middle class citizens that provided services and products for the Empire. IMO that was the key to Rome's longevity. There's a lesson in that.
I love reading about Pompeii. That sad tragedy has given us a vivid and unique view into the everyday lives of a thriving Roman community outside the center of government and commerce.

Except for slavery, I liked the Roman republic. I liked the planning and engineering. I liked the constant cycling of new leadership.
Regarding the empire, there were too few good emperors to meet my liking. Or, put another way, the empire allowed too many lousy people to hold power for too long. For every Augustus there were too many Tiberius - Caligula - Nero style emperors.

Until this question I wasn't, but I do like how they figured out that society needed to have entertainment to thrive and not implode.

@Roundandroundwego I don't understand what your argument is or what you are getting at or how it relates to what I said about roman culture

It was an example of the hegemonic power Western populations tend to create.
It was hated and discredited for centuries and then it finally fell.
Roman soldiers stood on the Silk Road in 48 bc, intending to take it over, all the way to China. The Parthians sent a regiment of police against them, with huge silk banners and Chinese steel weapons.
The Romans used their bronze shields, but the Chinese steel punctured them. They lost. But that's how the Romans discovered silk and steel. It's like how the West is discovering Iran and the rest of the world, today.

I had two years of Latin in high school and two years in college. I was never much of a student but I enjoyed reading about it.

@hunkalove Ever been to Rome?
hunkalove · 70-79, M
@ElwoodBlues Nope. Never wanted to.
Magicianzini · M
I'm a bit tired of it as we all should be.

I wish it had coincided with the advances in thought of the Enlightenment, the world would look very different today ... the Americas may never have been colonized by Europeans for example, Europe may have been democratic and more secular for much longer and less fragmented / "Balkanized" today, maybe all monarchies would be abolished by now ... it would've been interesting just to see the different path world history would have taken
Not really thought about it
