Why is it always "expat" when they're from the US, and "immigrant" when they're from anywhere else? 🤭

🔹Immigrant: A person who moves to a new country with the intention of settling there permanently, often seeking citizenship or long-term residency.

🔹Expat: A person living abroad temporarily, often for a specific work assignment, with the intention of eventually returning to their home country.

Americans will use the term expat for themselves whether they plan to stay for a short or long amount of time, while referring to foreigners in America as immigrants without knowing anything about how long they plan to stay. 😆

Back when I was blissfully unfamiliar with American mentality, I would write about having moved from Denmark to Ukraine, here on SW. I remember many comments and conversations which baffled me lol – keep in mind, this was before the war, so they didn't know what Ukraine was (they still don't tbf).

I was of course an immigrant, because I moved from one country to another, as a non-US citizen. 🤓

I once had a conversation with a man who I'd gotten along with for a while. I don't remember how we got to the topic, but at some point I mentioned that it was my opinion that Denmark (my home country) should receive less immigrants, as Denmark actually does a really poor job of integrating these people into Danish society: They should spend less money on letting in as many people, and more money on helping the people they do let in, achieve an aduaqate amount of life quality.

I could never have foreseen his reaction. He told me that he was very disappointed in me, as I myself was an immigrant. 😆

Keep in mind, I didn't intend to live in Ukraine indefinitely, I planned to return to my own country after approximately 5 years. I just wanted to experience my husband's culture.

I didn't know what his problem was, so I laughed nervously and stopped talking to him after that – now I know that he was just an American. 😅

He obviously didn't know that Denmark is one of the top countries in the world, nor that Ukraine is a poor developing country.

I revieved other brilliant comments from Americans as well:

🔹You are smootching off another country!
🔹You are useless to society!

This was before even telling them that I didn't work. When I told them that, all hell broke loose. 😆

🔹Go home to your own country and stop being on benefits!

Like honey, this is Ukraine, they don't have benefits. 💀

My parents were fairly well off throughout most of my life, so they would send me what to them was a miniscule amount of money, while here being enough for us to live very comfortably + in Ukraine women aren't even necessarily expected to work, we're expected to do other things like cleaning, cooking, and even making sure our husbands look presentable lol: My husband's grandmother was very angry with me because I didn't force my husband to cut his hair short. 😆

Anyways, I didn't work because I didn't have permanent residency (I still don't), and didn't need to work anyways. I was just travelling.

Now of course it's a different story as Russia launched a full-scale war against Ukraine, my husband can't leave the country during martial law, my parents went bankrupt, and now we struggle to survive. 😩

I hope the economy gets better again once the war ends, but for now I work by selling NSFW furry art online lol.

Oh well. It's still funny remembering these people now that I know what was actually wrong with them lol.

Please do not assume all Americans think alike! You and I used to talk. I am an American who was a teacher and organized student exchanges with Ukraine and Russia. I have been to both many times, as well as most of western Europe. I do NOT hate immigrants in the US--after all, except for native Americans, we are all immigrants of a sort. Immigrants built America, with their strong work ethic and desire to live better lives. I do not blame anyone from Latin America who comes from economic struggles or inhumane government to try to come to the US. Many of the immigrant-haters in the US would do the same if they were poor and struggling. There are compromises possible but it seems many politicians do not want them. We should be open to legal immigration, not for criminals of course (the fact is, illegal immigrants commit far fewer crimes in the US than citizens do--they just get more attention for it).

@Docdon23 In Denmark we also have those discussions: "Do immigrants commit more crime?" In reality, the majority of immigrants live in the poorest areas of Denmark, with only few Danish people – the majority of crime is committed in those areas, hence immigrants commit more crime? Now if you were to look at just one poor area, you'd see that just as many Danish people in those areas commit crime.

Denmark is a very anti-racist country, but ironically the few racist people we do have are the Danes who live in poor areas, whose own kids commit crimes too. 🙄

I know that there are many intelligent and kind Americans out there, the ones I reference in this post are a type of Americans. Sadly this type seems to become more common in your country, at least to me as an outsider. I read about all the ICE raids lately, it is so sad what's happening right now. It's crazy to think how much has changed in your country in just one year. I hope that upstanding people like yourself will demonstrate and get rid of the tyrant that calls himself a president.

@Nightwings Trust me, I and many I know are sad as well, sad and frustrated and angry. We are better than this. yes, our upcoming midterm elections and then the next Presidential election are crucial to turn this mess around. Too much hate, violence, selfishness, lack of love and kindness now. And little respect for the opinions of others, and too few attempts at compromise. I am actually an elected official who always seeks respect and compromise, and it is very difficult now.

@Docdon23 Do you believe that people from other countries should be vetted and have proper paperwork before coming into this country. Or do you believe that anyone can just come across the border when they want at anytime to permantly live in this country with out proper paperwork.

@BeachGirl47 As I have stated earlier, I do not support just letting anyone in--criminals, of course not. There are compromises to this that both parties agreed on but the president scuttled to make an election issue out of--as he is doing now. Immigrants have benefitted us far more than any negatives like crime, which is a bogus issue (illegal immigrants commit far fewer crimes than Americans do). Food prices will continue to rise as the shortage of farm workers increases. A fair compromise to legal immigration would benefit everyone but take away the false issue for the president and his party (by the way, Bush encouraged immigration to get more Hispanic votes--it is not just the Dems who have done that). This is a distraction from the real issues--tax breaks and more power for the ultra-rich and large corporations.
