Do you always initiate or say hello to your SW friends in DM, or wait till they say it?

I am not sure what the rule is here.
Do you always initiate a conversation with your friends on here?If you see them online or do you just wait sometime for them to say hello?

I've never been aware of any etiquette @Chiefjustice. If you want to chat to a friend why would you hesitate to message them? That sounds like the sort of game-playing insecure teenagers would indulge in
