Do you always initiate or say hello to your SW friends in DM, or wait till they say it?

I am not sure what the rule is here.
Do you always initiate a conversation with your friends on here?If you see them online or do you just wait sometime for them to say hello?

I don't initiate much in DMs anymore.
I don't think there's a rule. Just don't be pushy, that's all.
