Do you always initiate or say hello to your SW friends in DM, or wait till they say it?

I am not sure what the rule is here.
Do you always initiate a conversation with your friends on here?If you see them online or do you just wait sometime for them to say hello?

I don't really overthink it. If I consider them a friend I don't feel pressured to think of how to approach them like I would a work email lol
