Do you always initiate or say hello to your SW friends in DM, or wait till they say it?

I am not sure what the rule is here.
Do you always initiate a conversation with your friends on here?If you see them online or do you just wait sometime for them to say hello?

I rather not dm. I like chatting with my friends on posts. If I'm sending direct messages it's because someone else initiated it

... Not that it's normal SW etiquette, maybe I'm just slightly weird
