Do you always initiate or say hello to your SW friends in DM, or wait till they say it?

I am not sure what the rule is here.
Do you always initiate a conversation with your friends on here?If you see them online or do you just wait sometime for them to say hello?

Some of both w DMs, but generally I have initiated more. Its usually checking in w someone if something seems off, on something they shared in private .. a couple that are a bit more balanced and more frequent or regular chats.
