Do you always initiate or say hello to your SW friends in DM, or wait till they say it?

I am not sure what the rule is here.
Do you always initiate a conversation with your friends on here?If you see them online or do you just wait sometime for them to say hello?

I don't like spending any significant time in dm's. It's much more interesting to interact with friends in the forums. There is one person I talk to semi-regularly. They're special, tho.
