Do you always initiate or say hello to your SW friends in DM, or wait till they say it?

I am not sure what the rule is here.
Do you always initiate a conversation with your friends on here?If you see them online or do you just wait sometime for them to say hello?

It's mostly just interactions on posts. If there's more to be said beyond that it might end up in a DM but I don't think of there being any sort of rule. A lot of people don't even want the private interactions.
