what is pinned?

i have been here little more than a month, i keep seeing some posts marked as pinned, what is that?

If you make a comment on your own post, and then mark it "best comment", it becomes "pinned". this means everyone will see it as the first comment after the post.

What @DrWatson said for comments. And for posts it keeps them at the top of your profile above newer ones.

You are allowed to 'Pin' up to 5 Posts.

That means they will stay at the top of your feed so anyone going to your profile page will always see those posts first.
