I'm new and when you click on stories it just shows you other people's stories and you just want to write your own.

As the others have said that's how to do it. But in more detail, you can go to your profile, and you should see two buttons. One to add a story and one to add a question. Like where you probably found the button for the question you posted here. For a story you have to pick a group to post it under. Or you can also post directly from any group that you go into.
