Where do they go?

Why do some people disappear off SW just after they start chatting?

I don’t usually reply to message request from a guy I don’t know but recently I did. Curiosity I guess, partly bec he was half my age. Anyway after his second message I checked his profile and discovered “This user is taking a break from Similar Worlds.”

Well it’s no loss to me and I don’t care, yet I wonder why. Was he suddenly shy? Maybe someone else was rude to him, or he was rude to them? Is this common?

It happens to me all the time, as for why I have no idea.
I also get blocked mid conversation which is just as baffling.

@PhoenixPhail very! Some weird people on here

@Lilnonames There is nothing wrong with blocking someone, it just seems wrong mid conversation. I am glad to see you are polite enough to tell them why.
@Lilnonames I get to feeling that way often, but I stay to PM with a few friends.

I have been blocked for not answering immediately to some people

@Strictmichael75 Ha. If you ignore me I’ll never speak to you again.

@SW-User you know I won’t ?

@helenS I am always logged on but not always online ! Some people don’t understand Helen 😊

A life event (new job, death in family, sudden illness of the person, loss of a job, a divorce, etc.) could be the cause. For example, I was talking daily to a lady on EP for about a month, and she disappeared. 6 months later she messaged me to let me know she’d had a massive heart attack and open heart surgery. A different lady once suddenly blocked me, a few weeks later I got a message from her under a new profile letting me know her husband got into her account and blocked me. I guess it could be a lot of different reasons, for some users this type of site is like a people buffet.

Not unusual I think. One guy recently messaged me then blocked me after I said I wasn’t interested in being “mommy” in his breastfeeding role play.

I think I know who you mean, or someone similar. @SW-User

Lots of reasons yet one not given is some used the hiatus option instead of logging out.

This use to happen quite often. What it does is not allow others to stalk them since their profile posts are hiden.

I would keep on checking to see when they have logged back on.
SW-User
@DeWayfarer Is that so that if a favorite goes on hiatus you know when they come back? Don’t think I would use it.
DeWayfarer · 61-69, M
@SW-User not really for that reason I believe. More to see posts of certain users all the time.

As it is, feeds don't show all posts of even followers or friends posts. This option was more intended to make up for that.
SW-User
Ah, I get it. Some people I follow post a lot but only some of it shows up in my feed. @DeWayfarer
Sometimes they will engage in convo because they think they know you. Sometimes they want some information from you … sometimes it’s just sheer curiosity and when any one or all of these are accomplished, they are done and disappear. Best to hold people on SW at arms length and 2 arms length when you don’t know them. Hmm 🤔
SW-User
Agree. He was very much arm’s length.

Some people just don’t find this site that appealing and aren’t here that much. I’m sure some people are wondering why I’m not on Facebook or Quora anymore. You can’t take it personally.
@SW-User I've talked to people who disappear from here for months or even years at a time, and the reason is that they just didn't think about the site. That's one thing about anonymous social media is how you can build connections with strangers, then have no way to contact them if they're not on the platform you were using.

@LeopoldBloom
Yes it’s not unusual to take a break for a while. This was more like leaving the room in the middle of a conversation. Maybe something happened in another conversation with someone else
@SW-User If I'm talking to a woman and she suddenly vanishes, I assume her husband (or her parents) caught her.

A lot of people on SW "shotgun" it. In the meanwhile, things may be happening in real life, that forces them to shift focus. Either that, or he's worried his wife may discover his SW account on their shared computer, and he's trying to see if he can afford his own laptop, or better ways to hide it.
SW-User
I have stopped wondering tbh

It happens to me for some reason. Im thinking they were already chatting with someone or i said something i shouldn't have said. I rarely cont it as a loss.

SW is like a train or flight... He must have got off since he got the message "You have arrived at your destination"
ExtremeNext · 31-35
Did you scare him away by asking for a dick pic 🧐
SW-User
Yes, it's very common.
I've seen it a lot.

I can't figure that out. I've been here since the beginning. Like many, I go through periods of not wanting to be here, but I don't do this bizarre on again/off again thing.

Yes any of the above. No special mark, just a mauve X where his profile pic had been. @stound
