EP vs SW - differences?

I see people bemoaning the differences between SW and the defunct EP. What are the differences, and why have they come about? Is it a matter of greater/lesser moderation, altered structure of the forum; what?

I guess EP for many was unfiltered and anything went, whereas here it's seen as much more censored.
