.. where it shows the avatars of ten friends, is anyone else finding that at least half of those friends are people who have been gone from here for at least a year and in many cases a lot more?

Not necessarily your friends anyway. It's those you have "reacted" or replied to favorably.

The software knows who you have reacted or replied to favorably. It's how new users see people that don't know them. Despite not even following them.
