Why can I not translate my own posts and replies? 🥺

I wanna know whether it translates well. 😤

Hey, it does say beta! 🤷‍♂️😂

They probably will be trying many translation services.
Classified · M
@DeWayfarer But the BETA just means the translation part. Not whether you get access to it for your own writing. 😅
DeWayfarer · 61-69, M
@Classified no it means they just threw some quick code it to see which service is better for them.

They actually have a lot to consider before trying anything permanently.
Classified · M
@DeWayfarer Then they explicitly wrote code so that you can't translate your own writings.
DeWayfarer · 61-69, M
@Classified heck no! They have already mentioned they will be figuring out which translation service is the best one for them. There are many such services. Most they have to pay for.
Classified · M
@DeWayfarer So this specific service doesn't allow us to translate our own writings? That's weird.
DeWayfarer · 61-69, M
@Classified no they are just testing. They just threw in some quick code probably from their other site. Which BTW does do full translations.

And we are the guinea pigs!
@Classified a beta test is a trial of something to see if there are any issues.
The whole reason the word beta is there is to show this is a trial and isn't perfected yet.
Classified · M
@OogieBoogie I know, that wasn't what I was talking about. 😅
@Classified but why would you want to translate your own writing?

The concept is that we write in our own language, and translate replies to it.

If you wrote in another language, then you wounldnt be able to read your own post later 🤷‍♀️
Classified · M
@OogieBoogie So I can see whether the translation is correct and other people will understand the translation.
@Classified dear goodness!

It's a trial!😂

Give them a chance to even get the basics working.

This is quite a huge effort on their part. It doesn't translate just one or two languages... It seems be programmed for quite a few.

Which is pretty impressive for a first off.

Maybe give them a while to get it working and tweak the bugs out of it before you start wanting more.

It is a test.... Not a final phase.
Classified · M
@OogieBoogie But all I've aksed is to enable to option for my own writing too. If I don't tell them I want to, then they may not realise. Besides from what I know of code it is more effort to give everyone a button and then remove it from people's their own writings rather than simply giving it to everyone unless they separated that in an early stage of the code.
@Classified well when it comes to code, they possibly enabled it on just replies, and only enabling translation once, for a reason... Like to reduce load on the system.

Besides, if you wrote something in Swedish, how would you know it translated to Spanish properly?

You are overthinking this.

Unless you have learnt a language, practiced it and learnt its quirks an colloquialisms, you can never guarantee a translation to impart the perfect meaning you intend.

As people who are multilingual will testify to.
Classified · M
@OogieBoogie But I write in Dutch and translate to English. I can't check the Spanish, but if the English is good, then odds are the Spanish is as well.

The only once certainly makes sense. I didn't complain about that.
@Classified But how do you know people are going to translate only into english?

And assuming just because language 'a' translates into language 'b' correctly, doesn't mean it'll translate into language 'c' just as well.

Languages have differnt sentence structure, gendered nouns and verbs (or not), word structure and even vocabulary.

It's like every orange is a fruit, but not every fruit is an orange.
One translation doesn't guarantee all others.
Classified · M
@OogieBoogie In that case it is better to remove the translation option, because it is never perfect. Or only allow it to be used by people who know at least both English and Spanish.
@Classified hahaha.... Seriously?!!!

Mankind didn't get this far by being perfect.

No translation app is ever perfect.

I think it's better they allow us to try to communicate on a broader global scale than not.

And if you think it isn't perfect enough... Don't use it.
Classified · M
@OogieBoogie That was a bit of sarcasm on my part, because I'm very puzzled why it is bad that I want to be able to translate my own writing into English to check whether at least that is translated well and with that have the hope that it translates well into Spanish too.
@Classified thing is, you are relying on an app to translate accurately, then using the very same app to check itself.

If an app isn't perfect, then the translation might not be perfect, and as you don't speak the language fluently and colloquially, you won't know either way if it's accurate.

Youd have to check it against other translation apps to get any idea of its accuracy.
Classified · M
@OogieBoogie I can check both the Dutch, my native tongue, and the English. For that I'm not relying on the app. I simply want to check whether the app has translated it correctly. If the English is right then it seems logical that the likelihood that the Spanish is right is bigger than when the English is wrong.

Using other apps for the Spanish is a way of getting a feeling for it, but there is no guarantee that will be actually good either. Maybe they all make the same mistake.
@Classified Maybe you can use a friend to check.

Or even use me as a tester... Write something in Dutch, I'll screenshot it, and post it back 🤗

Then you can see how accurate it is.
Classified · M
@OogieBoogie That's a kind thing to offer. 😄

Another option is to use an alt account.

I'll make a second reply with something in Dutch, because I've seen examples where this app only translates one language when you write multiple in one reply or post.
Classified · M
@OogieBoogie Gaat het vertalen van deze reactie goed?
Is het veel werk om een afbeelding van het scherm te maken, dat in je album te stoppen en op te sturen?
@Classified okey doke.

Shoot 😊
