❗ Don't crop a risky picture for your profile picture ❗

The admins announced that when you chose a profile picture, you can then crop it to decide which part you want to show as a profile picture. See https://similarworlds.com/groups/admin-announcements/4031725-Crop-Profile-Picture-Hi-Similar-Worlds-Id-like-to

Now the problem is, there exists a trick where another user can get a hold of the original uncropped picture.

So please don't use an image for your profile picture which displays things you don't want others to see. For example even if you crop off your face to remain anonymous, there are users who can use the trick to see your face then.

There are probably lots of Sweeps who know how to do this trick, because I learned about it from a post years back.

If you crop it manually before you add it to SW, then there is no problem.

UPDATE: It's not a trick anymore. It is a feature. You can now click the picture on someone's profile to see the original one.

Yes - the picture uploaded is added to the album, just like before. The "Crop" feature is just to select the area for the thumbnail and profile picture.

This is just as it was before, except that before, SW used to "choose" which area to be cropped, while now we allow users to choose so.

@Nuno Thank you

@Nuno How can they see the rest of the pic? I thought they save to the album that’s not public unless you make it public?
Classified · M
@MellyMel22 Basically it's a simple hack which can be performed upon your profile picture. Totally against TOS, but that won't stop people from doing it.
MellyMel22 · F
@Classified Are you positive?
Classified · M
@MellyMel22 I think I could prove it to you. 😥
Nuno · Admin
@Classified It's not against the ToS, since the profile picture is a public image, whether it's the thumbnail or the full image.
Classified · M
@Nuno Not against ToS? The way to obtain it is pretty much a hack even though it is simple. 👀
Nuno · Admin
@Classified The full image is provided as part of the HTML (for when links are shared, etc), so it's public. In fact, it's our intention since long ago to have a "See Full Image" option there, but we haven't done it yet.

Point is, the Profile Picture is a public image, since anyone on SW can see it.

@Nuno Ok, never knew this. And I'm pretty sure other people don't know either. 😅

@Nuno it’s like the google drama all over again

@SW-User You're setting a photo as your Profile Picture, which appears all over the place!! Why would anyone consider it a private photo? 😮
Classified · M
@SW-User I didn't intend it to make it into that. 😭 Just wanted to warn people. 🥺
SW-User
@Nuno you mean you’ve seen my profile picture without asking…how very dare you
MellyMel22 · F
@Nuno A warning that the entire pic would be available to anyone who wanted to save it would’ve been nice.
@Nuno OK, so If I use a section of a photo from my private album, does that mean a person can have access the whole picture from this said hack?
MellyMel22 · F
Nuno · Admin
@OogieBoogie What do you mean with "use a section of a photo" ?
@Nuno well, its what the new cropping feature does... It enables you to enlarge a focused section of a picture.

(admittedly, Ive not tried this feature you're offering, as a I crop before I upload, I'm just curious to understand)
Nuno · Admin
@OogieBoogie If you set the image as the profile picture, then both the thumbnail/small image and the original/big image become public, independently from which album it is.
@Nuno ah... Thankyou for clearing that up... Makes sense😊👍
