📈 Similar Worlds #️⃣ pages Indexed, UP 3x since Group Consolidation 🚀

The number of webpages from Similar Worlds being indexed by Google (which will resultingly translate to other Search Engines),
has increased by Threefold (x3) since our release of Group Consolidation, / Restructuring,
which was done on July 23rd, 2021.
(Initial improvement changes were started in the prior month of June.)

This will lead to future growth on SW, in the coming months and years ahead.

📈 More Pages Indexed = More Visitors = More Signups & Growth 🚀

[c=666666](Corrected chart labelling)[/c]

This is as we have strategized, which is that these recent changes will improve the overall "Site Quality", Relevance and Organization, over time.

The real benefits to users, will be more visible once we have implemented the planned significant improvements to our "Relevance Algorithms", which will provide more relevant:

• Posts & Comments in Feeds
• Search Results
• Users, Activities, Recommendations
etc...

[sep]

While we understand that many users will not be happy with many of our decisions made in improving/adjusting the way how this site works and operates,

we (SW Staff) DO definitely always consider user feedback, very strongly, in every decision we make.

[sep]

Please note that a "Majority Vote" on a public poll (for example) will not always be indicative of the path we have decided to take on a decision,
(especially for years old feedback polls, where many factors would have since changed).

There will always be a lot of crucial data that is only available to SW Staff (just as with any other website/service), that also factors heavily in the final decisions we make.

[sep]

We continue to look forward to incoming growth for SW, in the coming months. 👍

Many of our recent and in-development changes to this site, are being done, in part, to allow and facilitate such user growth,
as well as to provide a higher quality experience to all of our users, in the long-term.

Thanks for your continued feedback, support and patience! 🙂

Kind regards,
-SW Staff

@Andrew @Nuno What does Google's search engine "see"?
My profile?
My posts?
My replies to posts?
"Hidden" posts?
Deleted posts?
Messages?

What options do I have to prevent Google from seeing everything I do here?
Andrew · Admin
Google Crawler (the bot that Google users to examine and index website pages),
can see what other users see PUBLICLY on the website.

The easy way to think of, and understand this is:
If any random person, can register on SW, browse around the site, and locate certain content,
then Google, like other web-crawlers, can do so to.

If a normal person, can browse to a public page/content on Similar Worlds,
"Bookmark" that page,
or "Save page as PDF / HTML",
then this is what a web-crawler can do also.
This is how the public internet works in general.

Example:
If a random "John Doe" user, can browse around the site,
encounter a specific post, through navigating around (not direct link),
encounter a user profile, through browsing around the public portions of this site.
then so can Google Crawler.

Google's crawler attempts to mimic a user's potential path and navigation around a website, so that it can get a read idea of the user experience, and content that is available to users who may browse that site.

As far as I'm aware, Google crawler should not be able to see:
• Hidden posts

a) Unless it finds that post through a Public link,
in which case, any random "John Doe" user can also locate that post.

b) The post was already found before it was hidden (the same as a user finding and bookmarking a post, before it was hidden).

There should certainly be no way for Google Crawler to see:
• Deleted posts
• Messages

In the very same way, a random "John Doe" user (or any other user, for a matter of fact), cannot see your Private Messages, or Deleted posts.

Note: There has been NO recent changes made to Post or other Privacy settings, especially in relation to any recent Group Consolidation changes.
What options do I have to prevent Google from seeing everything I do here?
What ever content/actions of yours are Non-Public (not visible to the default SW user), will also not be visible to Google.

So for example, setting your post as "Private", will prevent any regular, Non-Friend users, from seeing that post. Just as it would prevent Google from seeing that post.
ServantOfTheGoddess · 61-69, M
@Andrew I do not see an option to "set a post as Private". The options I see are "Visible to: Everyone [or] People I follow".

Are you saying that Google will not see posts limited to "People I follow"?
Are you saying that Google will not see posts limited to "People I follow"?
Yes, that is correct.

Content of yours that isn't visible publicly to other users, will also not be visible to Google.
ServantOfTheGoddess · 61-69, M
@Andrew OK. I still do not like the fact that a human being has to register and become a member of SW to see the "public" posts, but Google does not. However, it is good to have this option for some measure of privacy.
Andrew · Admin
@ServantOfTheGoddess I understand what you say, and thanks for the feedback.

Visitors can browse Similar Worlds as well, without being logged in (but they will have a more limited navigation experience).

Being able to see what content exists on a website, is what helps to allow new users to come to the decision to register and join a site.

We will still keep all these feedback and concerns in mind, and look into whether anything can reasonably be changed or improved.
SW-User
@Andrew Thank you. So, if we don't want Google to see, post to people we follow only, correct?
Andrew · Admin
@SW-User yes, I believe that is correct.
You're much welcome.
