What is your veiw on parents who smack there kids as disapline was you ever smacked as a kid growing up

I was smacked and beaten a lot.. abusively... I don't believe it ever helps or is necessary... a good parent will get the child to behave because the child understands why it's important.. bad parents smack and it doesn't make the child behave... just makes them resentful and more secretive
