Depends on how and when it's used, corporal punishment is outlawed in many places now but if used infrequently, often just the possibility of it happening is enough to counter the behaviour its punishing. If it's used on a regular basis, the child becomes immune to it and it's no longer seen as the ultimate last resort for punishing poor behaviour. We used to get the strap a lot at school which was a joke, at home was no joke.
