What’s the point of being able to join groups when no one ever actually looks at your groups 🤷🏾♀️
and most people don’t seem to actually join any anyway

There are different users.
I have a lot of groups, I customised my feed to groups and friends only as there are many posts I just don't want to see as they are on topics I'd rather not see.
So I check out people who post in a group I like and see what groups they have... I might then mute or block them or add them to my circle. But I'm in the minority here. Most just have the whole feed visible but I can't be doing with that.
Probably at some point sw will cease to work for me as it becomes more and more like twitter.
