Why do people misuse the word "dude" on SW?

Not for the first time I've had some troll call me "dude" and I've seen it being applied to other women on SW as well. Why, when the Oxford English Dictionary doesn't list it as a gender-neutral word? Why do people use a word like that inappropriately on this site?

I dunno, in my part of the world, it basically is gender neutral, and is often used as an interjection rather than a direct reference to the person being spoken to. Language evolves. Slang evolves even faster.

@QuixoticSoul From the wiki:
The slang eventually had gradual decline in usage until the early to mid 20th century when other subcultures of the U.S. began using it more frequently while again deriving it from the type of dress and eventually using it as a descriptor for common male and sometimes female companions. Eventually, lower class schools with a greater mix of subcultures allowed the word to spread to almost all cultures and eventually up the class ladders to become common use in the U.S. By the late 20th to early 21st century, dude had gained the ability to be used in the form of expression, whether that be disappointment, excitement, or loving and it also widened to be able to refer to any general person no matter race, gender, or culture.

...

In the early 1960s, dude became prominent in surfer culture as a synonym of guy or fella. The female equivalent was "dudette" or "dudess". but these have both fallen into disuse and "dude" is now also used as a unisex term.
@Moodswings You'd have a real hard time with "man" being used as a gender-neutral interjection in the 60s 😂

It's an American slang term, and Americans are going to use it in an American fashion. You'll just have to get used to it.

@Moodswings Because nobody can be arsed to keep track of shit like that, for one. And also because in 2019 english speakers around the world tend to know how to use dude properly in its many various contexts.
