I don't get involved or interested in foreign internal politics. It's boring enough watching our politicians lie and wriggle about Brexit without any admitting they have not got a clue what to do.

@ThatMusgraveWoman I disagree. They know exactly what they are doing. The trick is not to let everyone else know.😉
ThatMusgraveWoman · 70-79, F
@whowasthatmaskedman including themselves? With luck the whole thing will fall through, they'll see sense and we'll stay in Europe.
whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
@ThatMusgraveWoman While that would be nice, I dont think so. I think Boris is in place to see a No Deal Brexit go through. There is a lot of money riding on this.
ThatMusgraveWoman · 70-79, F
@whowasthatmaskedman He might be forcing Scotland and Nothern Ireland out of the United Kingdom as well as welcoming in massive price rises, unemployment and all sorts of trouble, but, hey-ho, Boris knows best - or thinks he does.
whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
@ThatMusgraveWoman Now if I was Boris, I would focus on October 31, then allow Scotland and the North of Ireland to cause trouble for the next PM to solve. I doubt he will be there for long.
ThatMusgraveWoman · 70-79, F
@whowasthatmaskedman Scotland voted overwhelmingly to stay in Europe: by ignoring one of the four component nations in the UK, the tories may be causing theselves much worse trouble than staying in the EU. By ignoring Northern Ireland's border fears, the tories are treating them with contempt. Do they have any conception of life without the Union?
whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
@ThatMusgraveWoman Agreed. But Scotland already voted down their chance to break from England. And the British arent in the mood for second votes. ..Plus. And I say this as someone who is married to a Scot. No one gave the English a Vote on whether they wanted to keep Scotland. THAT could be an interesting result.
ThatMusgraveWoman · 70-79, F
@whowasthatmaskedman Scotland voted no on the understanding they would stay in Europe - and with a whole host of other promises that were only partially kept. I am not sure what you mean by England 'keeping' Scotland. It is meant to be a union of two equals, not a union where one dominates the other.
Could you imagine England alone? We have not been alone since about 1286 or so - and depend incredibly much on our partners in the UK. Could you imagine, say, if England had been alone during Hitler's War?
ThatMusgraveWoman · 70-79, F
@whowasthatmaskedman You are spot on though, that England might vote to split from Scotland. The ignorance amongst my countrymen and women is astounding. Most have no idea how much we depend on Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland for everything from defence to water to the economy.
whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
@ThatMusgraveWoman Without going all conspiracy theory on you (The economics interest me more than the politics) There is a lot of money to be made by a rich few if the rule books need to be rewritten in a hurry, with all sorts of quick deals needing to be done. Since the EU set the leaving price so high, they have shot themselves in the foot and Boris was always backed by the money people. This is why he stepped back last time, to let May take all the heat and get the people so sick of the thing they just want it over. Now he gets to play Churchill for a short while, win the war against the dreaded Eurofoe and take a bow. It is all carefully stage managed.
ThatMusgraveWoman · 70-79, F
@whowasthatmaskedman I'm not arguing that the capitalists will make a killing - they always do, don't they? And the rest of us will suffer. Churchill was in favour of a united Europe, if I recall (I have little time for Churchill normally) More bloody fool us for believing the propaganda.
whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
@ThatMusgraveWoman Yes.. Actually I believe in Brexit. But not for the reasons stated in any arguments. I simply see the rest of the EU nations failing , particularly in the coming global recession and the EU demanding more and more from the viable members to keep plugging holes in the sinking ship. Germany, and France simply cant keep that up and Britain is better off having its own recession that it only has to dig itself out of. Of course we will need to fast forward 15 to 20 years to see if I am correct.
ThatMusgraveWoman · 70-79, F
@whowasthatmaskedman If there is a Britain by that time. Personally I think that by treating the other nations of the UK with contempt and concentrating only on England, the UK government has weakened the union irreparably. I don't think England has the guts to survive alone, or the talent.
whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
@ThatMusgraveWoman You are probably correct. Which is why I believe Scotland and Northern Ireland will scream blue Murder. Then stick with Britain. The alternatives for them are unpalatable.
ThatMusgraveWoman · 70-79, F
@whowasthatmaskedman Not sure about Northern Ireland but I can see them uniting with the republic and an influx of Protestants into the UK. Scotland's economy is pretty robust and their trade with the EU is increasing. They would do very well alone - better than England, I think. They are better thought of as a people!
whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
@ThatMusgraveWoman Dont forget, I married one. 😉 Probably best we leave it there or I will be in trouble . I am sending her back for her Pilgrimage to Glasgow in a few weeks with our daughter. Personally I dont wish to go. I think the Romans had the right idea.
ThatMusgraveWoman · 70-79, F
@whowasthatmaskedman My first husband was Scottish too. I lived in Arbroath with him when he was based there. Brilliant, forthright people with hearts of gold and the ability to suss out falseness in seconds. As you say, the Romans were right to be scared of them. The only frontier of the Roman Empire that needed a huge stone wall - and the very qualities that kept Scotland independent from England for centuries. They will do great if they go independent -and we will lose immensely. Likewise the Ulsterfolk: my man did two tours there and I lived in Lisburn for a year. Survivors all.
