I guess sometimes people want to emphasize certain words by making them longer. That's the only reason I can think of. I admit, I've done this a couple of times, when I was being a bit dramatic. But yes, I think it's best to just speak and write proper English. Deviations from that should at least be kept to a minimum. As for text-speak, I sometimes find that a bit annoying myself, though I've gotten used to seeing "LOL" here.

No, it doesn't excuse laziness. I can understand using shorthand if you're taking notes in school and can't write fast enough to keep up, but no one else has to read that except you. I think that in messages written to others, people should use full words.
