If you had 1st. choice from a litter of puppies, would you choose 1.) The bravest/a leader 2.) The cleverest/most curious or 3.) The fittest/healthies

If those were my only choices probably the fittest/healthiest. However, I have had and taken care of runts, and they can be more interesting.
