Grammer nazis be aware that some people have dyslexia or have dodgy keyboards.

Never is there a 100% of people who do not have issues that inhibit their ability to spell words correctly so why risk offending those who cannot help it.

Shakespeare couldn't even spell his own name yet he is often regarded as the greatest writer of all time.

The method of correcting ones grammar in the middle of a debate, argument or undesired conversation is often used to derail the other so that the person struggles to get their point across.

Back in Shakespeare's time, adding letters to words was seen as a sign of intelligence thus the reason he got away with making up words. Nowadays students get punished for creating new words instead of being congratulated. Roald dahl did it, Shakespeare did it.

PS my experience of dyslexia is that my entire dads side of my family is dyslexic.

Or ... they are writing in English, which is their fourth language even though it is your only language OR they have more important concerns in life than a typo on SW.

Good grief, Grammar Nazis.

@Mamapolo2016 English is my second language and I often find myself correcting people from the US.
And you correct them because? They are desperately in need of your linguistic wisdom?@OnixBre

@Mamapolo2016 I had a friend who was from china. English was her 2nd language. She asked me to correct her if she made a mistake so that she could learn however I would never do it if I wasn't asked first as it's rude and is often used to derail a persons conversation.
That circumstance with your friend is perfectly justifiable.

Correcting someone to prove you know something you think they don't know is only and always sad.

In addition, I frequently see the GNs quibbling about somebody else's error while making plenty of their own.

This forum is conversational, not doctoral dissertation, English.

@Mamapolo2016 Obviously. Though, it would be almost insulting to wisdom to attribute basic understanding of a native language to it.
Laughing. Shaking my head.@OnixBre
May I ask what you do for a living? Your occupation, profession?@OnixBre

@Mamapolo2016 In 50 years, don't dare blame anyone else but yourself for the degrading society.

If you aren't there already.
BlackcurrentSundae · 22-25, F
@OnixBre Language is constantly evolving. Shakespeare couldn't even spell his own name.
In 50 years I will be long dead. Society is composed of human beings and by degrading people we degrade society.

I love the English language and it makes me wince to see it abused.

Not everyone on social media is a linguist. Some are auto mechanics or chefs or mothers or soldiers. I know how to diagram an English sentence but I do not know what to do when the check engine light comes on in my Yaris.

The kind of specialized knowledge I possess is not the only wisdom there is. @OnixBre

@Mamapolo2016 My English teacher called me a purist. I understand the pain it causes but although I hate to say it, this is how language evolves.
You are confusing me. Earlier you said you would not correct someone unless asked?

If someone asks to be improved, then the correction is valuable.

If the teaching is not invited, it is pointless and worthless and public correction serves only to prove the corrector's need to feel superior.

@Mamapolo2016 English is my second language. I come from a country torn by war in my childhood, with shitty education and a poor family (most were).

I am not a linguist. I never had English lessons. I finished to be an ordinary salesman in a country where no one used to speak English.

Language is not a specialized knowledge. It's a method of communication. You're forced to learn one just by being a part of a society, whether it's a spoken language or anything else. It's taught in every school you ever attend.

Not caring and using distorted language is not anything positive. It's a cancer that tells people it is okay to not get educated. If you can think of a way to change the language for better - be my guest. It won't happen by never caring to learn the difference between "your" and "you're".
That is simply insulting to the entire history of the humankind and teaches newer generations that they do not need this distinction.

Though it has nothing to do with this conversation, if you do not know what to do when your check engine light goes on, you could seek that knowledge out.
I've taught myself business, programming, VR technologies, SEO, poker, design, wordpress, guitar, piano and bases in 5 different languages.

I'm not smart. I'm persistent and awake. I failed a math class.

There is absolutely no mercy for those that teach others it is alright to be stupid. That's how society reverts back to sitting on the branches and eating bananas.

Rise above what you believe limits you. Do not praise self-declared snowflakes.
BlackcurrentSundae · 22-25, F
@OnixBre congrats on your self education but I'm not against education just the those who troll others for their own amusement despite their declarations otherwise.
Correcting someone on SW for mistaking 'your' for 'you're' will not save the world for democracy or any other philosophy.

I neither require nor seek your mercy, for myself or others. The flagrant disregard for manners and kindness is as at least as destructive to peace, virtue and progress as a grammatical error on SW. In terms of communication effectiveness, if you know they meant 'you're' when they used 'your,' they ARE communicating with you at least.

I won't spend my day in discussion about a silly subject with a Social Grammar Warrior.

I bid you adieu.

@BlackcurrentSundae Trolls are bad. But when it comes to obvious faults of basic education, even malicious trolling can be a drive to actually get education and eliminate the problem at the core.
We do not bully people. We point out that they are setting a bad example. Also, trust me, there is nothing amusing about it. It has pissed me off so much in the past, nearly ruining my day sometimes.

BlackcurrentSundae · 22-25, F
@Mamapolo2016 For all we know in 100yrs we may be communicating via sign language.
BlackcurrentSundae · 22-25, F
@OnixBre Do not defend trolls.
I hope not. I love language. But I'll be gone, so, oh, well.@BlackcurrentSundae
BlackcurrentSundae · 22-25, F
@Mamapolo2016 It would be easier to learn and easier to transfer across countries meaning we could all potentially sign the same language, creating a more efficient world. It would unite humanity.
I am rather fond of humanity's differences. I am glad I won't live in a homogenous world.

@BlackcurrentSundae
OnixBre · 26-30, M
@BlackcurrentSundae I don't believe that will happen for practical reasons. Either way, ignoring the problem for the sake of "maybe we won't need it one day" is not an answer to the problem unfortunately.
BlackcurrentSundae · 22-25, F
@OnixBre Practical reasons? Babies learn visual cues before language.
OnixBre · 26-30, M
@BlackcurrentSundae Sign language requires visual focus. Ignoring the fact that it means focusing on only one person at the time there are ample other issues with using this as a main method of communication.

Besides, we have voices. Even if language did not exist, people would grunt at each other for attention / danger, which would bring us back to language.
BlackcurrentSundae · 22-25, F
@OnixBre Back to my original point, trolling is wrong, correcting those that do not wish to be corrected is rude. Leave it to the educators. You want to do something become a teacher or vote labour (if in Britain).
